The Greatest Love…He’s Able
Imagine waking up out of your sleep with the words “Don’t give up on God, because He won’t give up on you…He’s ABLE” rushing through your spirit. At first, I thought it was just a part of a dream, but a lot of the devotionals I write often come to me in the wee hours of the morning when I am sleep. So as the words to that song kept reverberating in my spirit as I slept, I knew He awakened me to share this with somebody this morning. He is able.
As my spirit sang those words, I didn’t expect to write a devotional. I was just going to send the lyrics out as the Song of the Day. However, the song quieted in my mind and a scripture became clear instead, Ephesians 3:20. “20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,” reads the NIV. The poetic and symmetrical words of the KJV states “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,”
Do you understand those words? God uses two superlatives together, “exceeding abundantly” and “immeasurably more” to give us a very specific message. Paul, the writer of Ephesians, is not just talking about God to us; God is talking to us about His Son. HE says we have the power of Christ in US and because of that, HE can and will do more than we think is possible. Whatever problem you may be facing, it is not greater than God. Whatever battle you are in the midst of, it is not greater than God. Whatever dream you have given up on, it can be accomplished. Whatever you ask or think is not beyond God.
Many of you know that for years I felt the Lord calling me to ministry in some form and by now, you realize how much of a battle it has been within me. It hasn’t been a battle because I didn’t want to be called (although those first years it was a struggle); instead my issue has always been how that ministry looks. I am a domineering, demanding, planner and those qualities do not mix well with being a follower of Christ (trust me they don’t), yet I am. (Side note: I am also a compassionate, merciful, giver and those qualities don’t mix well with the other side of me either) My ministry journey has been the one thing I have hated, but what God has wanted it to be…unclear. It has been a struggle not to give up on God and more times than I would like to admit, I did. After graduating from “Bible College”, I often felt lost because my life afterward did not go as I had planned. I gave up on God because I focused on the how and forgot to simply trust His promise to me.
Where have you given up on God? What fear are you holding on to that you think is bigger than God? What do you believe is beyond God? And before you say nothing, stop a moment, and think. What has kept you up at night? What battle are you in now? Just as sin is pervasive, negative thoughts are so pervasive that you often do not realize how they grab a hold of your spirit and subtly shift your thinking. But what if today, you shift it back? What if today, you recognize that HE IS ABLE? HE IS ABLE to bless your household. HE IS ABLE to give you not a job, but a career. HE IS ABLE to give you the family you have wanted. HE IS ABLE to give you the godly mate you have desired. HE IS ABLE to heal your marriage. HE IS ABLE to heal your friendships. HE IS ABLE to heal your family. HE IS ABLE to restore peace to your spirit.
What if this day, in that secret place, you answer every doubt and every fear with He IS ABLE? Imagine if you did that today and tomorrow and every day after. What then could you…could we…accomplish? I am not talking about positive thinking. I am not a proponent of books that tell you all you got to do is think positive thoughts nor am I that big on “name it and claim it” prosperity preaching. But what I do know is that HE IS ABLE to do what He said He would do. Believe it and do not doubt it even when the path is dark and unclear. He CAN do exceeding abundantly and immeasurably more than you can ask, think, or imagine. That is the character and nature of God. He’s Able.
